Registered Master Joiners are Joinery Manufacturers.

Are you the owner or manager of a joinery manufacturing business? If so, you might be eligible to register as a Master Joiner. By becoming a Registered Master Joiner, you’ll enjoy various membership perks such as discounts, resources, networking, professional development opportunities, and representation. Members participate in apprentice training, attend meetings, and share knowledge across 10 branches nationwide. It’s essential for members to maintain the ethics and standards of professional practice, as any breaches may result in cancellation of their membership. Members have the right to vote and can bring their staff to Master Joiner meetings and events.

Retired Registered Master Joiners is a retired Master Joiner still engaged in the joinery community.

Retired Registered Master Joiner membership is available to those who were registered Master Joiners and owned a joinery manufacturing business at the time of retirement and are active members. Retired members can still actively engage in industry and membership matters. They can attend meetings, receive discounts, and participate in member-led initiatives.

Individual Joinery Practitioner is a Joiner providing specific services to the Registered Master Joiner community which would normally be provided by the manufacturing Joiner.

To qualify for membership, you must be a sole trader or a company with one employee (excluding an administrator), a qualified professional with over two years of experience providing joinery services. If you are involved in joinery-specific services, then this category is for you. Once accepted, you can attend local meetings, enjoy membership benefits, and use the branding of Individual Joinery Practitioner.

Honorary Life Membership

Honorary life membership is bestowed to any person who has given long and distinguished service to the Federation as it recognises the service performed by the recipient.  Nominations are considered by the Executive Committee only.

Our current distinguished life members are:

Sel Baker apprenticed to Albert Thomas at Waihi Timber and Joinery, then worked for H D Raymond in Katikati, Wilkins & Co and Seath Dillimore & Co, before starting on his own and advancing an actively engaged career in the joinery industry including active participation in the Joinery Industry Training Organisation, Master Joiners Waikato Bay of Plenty Branch and Executive Committee member and President.

Roger Aburn began his career with A J Price, Dunedin in 1961.  Roger spent time with Mearns & Leckie Limited and as an active member of the Otago branch, Roger became the President and represented the branch on the Executive Committee. 

 

Roy Reid was in charge of Lunds Joinery in Timaru and attended the first meeting of the then South Canterbury/North Otago Joinery Manufacturers’ Association on 3rd October 1974. At the second meeting in November 1974 Roy was elected Vice President and he was elected President November 1976 to 1978.  Roy’s industry participation included the Joinery Industry Training Organisation Board, Apprentice Committee of the Dept of Labour, and Training Advisory for JITO till finally retiring in 2009.



 

Gary Turner apprenticed at age 16 and across a 42-year career has had only two employers.  Member number 566, Gary has had substantial involvement in training apprentices and serving on the Joinery Industry training organisation.  As a Registered Master Joiner Gary also participated in the Allied Trades Governance Group, the development of joinery qualifications and continues his work on the national Joinery Advisory Group and has been the branch, President.



 

 

Peter Leith left school at 16 to start his apprenticeship in Joinery, Peter went out on his own in 1983 aged 23 initially working from home.  By 2002 Peter had purchased a CNC machine and set up a new factory up the road where his joinery team has included 13 apprentices.  Peter has been a Master Joiner for 22 years and has served on the Executive Committee, and local branch President and contributed heavily the world skills for 20 years.



 

 

Rhys Powell left school in 6th form and began his apprenticeship at Jones and Sandford where he learnt the full craft of joinery including coffin making, cabinetry and working with solid timber.  Rhys is Registered Master Joiner member 561 and became the Taranaki President in 2011 then leapt into National President in 2012.  Rhys is an active advocate of the Master Joiners ethos in the Taranaki region and continues to mentor the next generation.



 

 

Mark Pickford began his apprenticeship earning just $21.14 cents per week, and completing a craftsman joinery apprenticeship became a joinery foreman and manager before becoming a shareholder in H R Jones, Feilding.  Marks has now advanced the next generation into the business having served a career as President of Central Master Joiner branch, committee service for 14 years and a term as National President.  Mark is still engaged in event organising for members and having spent much of this career training apprentices is still called upon for training advice.    Mark is a mentor to start-up joinery companies in Manawatu and his apprentices have continued to earn national awards.   Mark is also an active employer of neurodiverse team members and promotes their independence.   A far cry from his 2ndyear apprentice report back in the day which described Mark as showing some ability that could develop with a better attitude’!



 

 

Associate membership

Master Joiners recognise the role of quality suppliers to Joinery businesses. Ethical, quality and sustainable supply of materials improves the professional standing of Master Joiners.

Associate membership may be granted on a National or Regional basis subject to the completion of the online membership application form and the eligibility test and process. Associate membership is not transferable to subsidiaries, groups or other entities related to the applicant. On successful application, Associate members and their nomination representatives may attend branch meetings, participate in the annual conference, and collaborate on industry initiatives but may not hold office and do not have the right to vote.

National Associate membership

National Associates are nationwide industry suppliers to the Master Joiner Community. National Associate members are profiled on the Master Joiners website, are profiled in the Joiners Magazine, and have the right to display the dedicated Associate Master Joiner branding. National Associate members may not hold office and do not have the right to vote.

Regional Associate membership

Regional Associates are regional industry suppliers to the local community.  Representatives may attend meetings and events, receive e-comms, and be invited to participate in local initiatives. The member will be entitled to use the Master Joiner (branch) Associate badge and is not entitled to use the Registered Master Joiner badge, hold office, and hold no voting rights.
