Join us to visit Ryan’s Kitchens, a family-owned business in Christchurch. The team at Ryan’s Kitchens offers a complete range of services, including design, manufacturing, and installation. We will also visit Ara Training Campus, which provides both part-time and full-time joinery training opportunities. This includes a Certificate in Joinery with options for specializing in stairs or cabinetry.

Buses will be available for delegates in the Addington venue carpark. The buses will leave at 12:00 pm and return at 3:00 pm.

9.10am – Keynote Speaker – The Joinery Coach, Bruce Poling covers growing your business without going broke, attracting great talent, increasing profits without crazy hours and answer your direct questions. 

9.50am – Construction Contracts – Jared Holt and Olivia MacGregor, Tavendale & Partners – The focus will be on managing contractual aspects of joinery trades, including removing key provisions joiners should be wary of in proposed subcontracts, requesting key provisions that may be missing, and handling challenging communications during the works such as issuing notices of variations and delays, along with other considerations for dispute resolution.

10.40am – Compliant Timber Joiner – TS 4211 and other regulatory updates with MBIE.

11.30am – Wood Dust – Jane Cuming, Technical Manager, Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association (WPMA).  

WPMA is currently advocating for a change in the way WorKSafe set Worker Exposure Standards (WES). In this presentation Jane will describe what needs to change and why. She will also briefly touch on what is happening with softwood dust WES.

Glazing – Low E Glass – Selecting and Using Low-E Glass for Optimal Performance

Understanding low-emissivity (low-e) glass is crucial for energy-efficient, comfortable, and visually appealing buildings. We discuss factors to consider when choosing low-e glass including climate, building orientation, aesthetic requirements, and compatibility with joinery. We’ll cover compatibility between low-e coatings and spacer materials when integrating low-e glass in timber joinery to prevent chemical reactions and maintain the glazing unit’s integrity.

About our speakers: Brendon Peterson and Maurice Earl from Architectural Glass Products (AGP) shared insights from their world-class facility in Hautapu near Cambridge. AGP, awarded the 2022 Waikato Chamber of Commerce Business Growth award, exemplifies excellence in double glazing manufacturing, providing high-quality products.

Joinery Detailing Qualification

New Zealand Diploma in Joinery Detailing (Level 5) and skill standards.

This breakout session will have a panel of representatives to answer your questions about the role of Waihanga Ara Rau working with industry to develop the new joinery detailing qualification and skills standards.

The session will include:

  • A short presentation on Waihanga Ara Rau and how skill standards provide benefits to industry.
  • A discussion activity.
  • A panel to answer your questions on the new products and next steps.

There will also be information on how you can provide feedback and hear about any future developments. 

1.40pmThe Joinery Coach Demonstration – We are getting hands on!

Explore how to turn your passion for craftsmanship into a successful business. In this session, we will discuss changing your mindset from being a technician to an entrepreneur, increasing productivity with modern technology, and boosting business efficiency through hands-on simulations. Join The Joinery Coach to learn how to balance your love for the craft with business success.  

3.00pm –  Touchpoints of Solvency with RITANZ – Panel Discussion

RITANZ supports professionals in New Zealand’s insolvency industry. Our presentation will showcase steps for managing solvency risks and seeking timely guidance. Through real-world examples and industry trends, delegates will learn to strengthen their businesses and achieve sustained success. This session will empower you to seize control of your future and actively shape it. Meet  Arna Ward, a 36-year-old single mother from Invercargill, bravely pursued her passion for joinery after a 12-year career as a hairdresser. Despite initial challenges, she found a welcoming environment at JB Joinery, where she now leads her own team and mentors apprentices.

Arna is committed to empowering more women to join the joinery industry, finding the work immensely fulfilling. Despite the occasional frustration, the pride of completing a project makes it all worthwhile.Arna Ward, a 36-year-old single mom from Invercargill, transitioned from a 12-year career as a hairdresser to pursue her passion for joinery. Despite facing initial challenges, she found a supportive environment at JB Joinery. Now, she not only runs her own crew but also trains apprentices. Arna is determined to encourage more women to join the joinery industry and finds the work immensely rewarding. She believes that despite the frustrations, the satisfaction of completing a project makes it all worth it.

10.00 am – Emma Dunkley of NAWIC shares insights into the work of organisation, its progress and will share what is trending. 

An open floor panel discussion will follow the presentations.

Join us for a relaxing day at the Partners Program on Friday, September 27th, 2024. The day will begin with buses departing from Addington Raceway and Event Centre at 9:30 AM and returning by 3:30 PM. The registration fee is all-inclusive of activities, lunch, and bus transit.

First, you will take a breathtaking gondola ride up to the summit station to marvel at the beauty of Christchurch. While there, you can enjoy some shopping and visit the scan and learn site to learn more about the amazing views before you.

After taking in the sights, you will head to Paint n Sip, where you will be provided with all the equipment you need to paint like a pro, with a glass of giggles on the side.  Then it’s off to indulge in a traditional Christchurch lunch.
